You may recognize Salzburg as the stunning alpine location from The Sound of Music, but its cultural importance goes back well beyond this. Birthplace of 18th-century composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, today it hosts the world famous Salzburg Festival and its cobbled streets are home to many opera, concert, and theatre venues. The Old Town, or Altstadt, is a UNESCO World Heritage site and showcases Baroque architecture, graceful domes and stunning spires. Venture into the mountains that line the city and visit its legendary clifftop fortress, or spend an afternoon strolling through Mirabell Palace and its resplendent gardens, built hundreds of years ago by an archbishop for his favourite courtesan. Located near the Salzach River and the Mozarteum University of Music and Arts, the palace is considered one of the most romantic places in Salzburg.
