Soul-catching kind of place, rugged and barren, yet full of impressive shows of xeric beauty

Bassa Maina Villas & Suites is a fabulous boutique hotel located on the wild Mani Peninsula of Greece’s Peloponnese, a dreamy, soul-catching kind of place, rugged and barren, yet full of impressive shows of xeric beauty.

Occupying a fortress-like position on the cliff-tops backed by the impressive Mount Taygetus, Bassa Maina’s stone-clad luxury villas and suites stand guard over a never-ending panorama of cobalt blues. This is the perfect recluse for those that love to simply gaze out at sea and soak up the coastal drama. Wide private terraces offer remarkable spaces to revel in every hue of blue from morning coffee in your woven hammock to a peach-flecked sunset - a startling sight, especially from the seclusion of your own space. At night, a dazzle of stars pinpricks inky skies, while you luxuriate in your bubbly jacuzzi, Kydonitsa in-hand. Nothing can take away from the intense colours of the seabound Mani Peninsula, so in contrast, the interior design is consciously sober. Chunky honeyed stone walls and raw timber rafters play host to a palette of biscuit, chalked white linen sofas, oversized basket weave shades and designer lighting. The design narrative marries centuries-old regional traditions with subtle modernity.

Bassa Maina was born from a seedling of an idea, the land owned for ten years by an Athens family who wanted to create an idyll in a part of rural Greece that remains remote to this day. This is their success story.

Nine independent, stone-built villas and suites spill over the rugged cliffs of the Mani Peninsula. Each one is uniquely designed, yet they all share the same unobstructed view of the shimmering cobalt-blue Mediterranean Sea. From the cool, airy interiors to the sea-facing terraces, every aspect is designed to soothe by using a patina of taupe, earthy tones and eggshell whites. Flashes of colour come from perfectly framed windows which present stop-and-stare moments onto the hazy blues. Wooden beds are encased in sheer gauzy curtains that shift in the breeze, shuttered windows promise cool, dark mornings and bathrooms are havens of stone and wood. Additions of rain showers, Nespresso machines and 40-inch televisions keep the modern traveller happy.

For Bassa Maina, the outside is of as much importance as the inside and with an instinctive tapping into travellers’ wishes, each villa and suite comes with a lavish exterior area dotted with hammocks, loungers and Jacuzzis.

Here is the place to linger with breakfast brought to the room, or to sip an ice-cold Peloponnesian wine as the sun starts to lose its heat.

All villas have their own private entrance, ensuring complete privacy and seclusion. Inside, comfortable sitting and dining areas are bathed in natural light,  from large windows that let in the breeze and command staggering views. Bathrooms are beautiful and ultra-modern and kitchenettes come fully equipped for rustling up bites and meals.

Everything, from linen to decoration, and from lights to fabrics and colour schemes, has been carefully selected and meticulously designed to create a warm, hospitable environment and to inspire a deep sense of relaxation, regardless of the time of year.

Dining | Bassa Maina Luxury Villas Suites | Mani, Peloponnese

As well as your private terrace, Bassa Maina has a smattering of sea-facing patios to enjoy an alfresco breakfast or coffee but its chic restaurant, Crocus, is where you can experience Peloponnese cuisine with a creative twist. Using family recipes and local produce, taste the Mani way of life through Crocus’s dishes.

Catching the sunset with an aperitif on the restaurant’s terrace is highly recommended or seek cosiness inside where there is an open fire for cooler evenings.

You won’t tire of breakfast at Bassa Maina as the hotel makes a conscious effort at variety every day. Loaves of bread, marmalades and jams are all handmade from the highest-quality Peloponnese produce. Have your eggs cooked any way with an impressive seven choices, perhaps one for every day of the week - should you be lucky enough to stay here that long.

The surrounding seascapes soothe the soul and put you in the mindset for self-care. Private Jacuzzis facing the sunset are the perfect tonic for world-weary travellers. Address your inner balance further by booking a massage in the comfort of your own room, bringing the very essence of the Mediterranean inside via herb compresses and aromatherapy oils.

Mani Peninsula Greece

Occupying a remote clifftop location of the Mani Peninsula, on Greece’s rugged Peloponnese, Bassa Maina is driving distance from fortified Kelefa Castle, built in the 17th century by the Ottomans. Nearby is Diros Cave, a natural underground cathedral and the sparkling waters of Mavrovouni Beach is a gentle 20-minute road trip away. You’ll find Kalamata Airport to be a two-hour drive away.

Owners Vassilis and Eleni found this virgin 21 acres of Mani Peninsula land, 200 metres above sea level and knew it had to become something special. Intending it to be a family holiday home, what they achieved over ten years of dedicated work and unending passion to the project is reflected in this sophisticated collection of houses that celebrate the sea. Eleni explains that it has become  “an exclusive retreat for luxury travellers, presenting the local traditional architecture in a luxurious but at the same time "zen" version, aiming for comfort, tranquillity and relaxation.”
