Lake Caldaro with wooden pier jetty from the Seehotel Ambach in Caldaro/Kaltern South Tyrol Italy

Curvaceous Seventies

Rooms

Seehotel Ambach features 28 boutique rooms and 4 luxury suites in 1970s Style, all accommodation is with lake views of Lake Caldaro in South Tyrol Italy. Each is a retreat and inspiration, designed with the elements of water, air and earth. Othmar Barth also used these elements for the interior colour and form.

Suite 1973

The tall windows and two separate balconies open towards the lake like no other place in the hotel. This stately suite on the second floor has recently been completely renovated.

Elegant and light, practical and bold with small, lovingly placed accents which are in memory of Barth's signature style. For the bathroom, architect Walter Angonese has used ceramic extensively and included contemporary upholstered furniture by Moroso. Elements that are seemingly opposites are harmonised, as seen in the tubular aluminium structure of the rounded sofa: a Barth element recognizable throughout the hotel. Highly contrastive, the bright red of the metal responds to the muted colours of the textiles.

Classic Suite

The bespoke early 1970s style furniture and design pieces simply exude comfort. The expansive glass frontage brings the lake and the park right into the suite, creating stunning lighting effects.

Simple Caroline Pine furniture, with the predominance of clean lines and distinctive colours are Othmar Barth's signature design for Seehotel Ambach's interior. Barth settled primarily for a restricted palette of matte red oxide or olive green. The original furniture, bearing the signs of aging, was entrusted to local master craftspeople for restoration. Everything has been sanded, polished and reupholstered. However, not a single item of furniture was replaced or altered in form or colour.

Basic Suite

The suite on the ground floor has been completely refurbished with modern design pieces which blend in effortlessly with the overall 1970s feel. Separate rooms and daybed especially meet the needs of families.

With a total 32 m2, divided into two distinct zones, the Basic Suite is especially good for families up to four people. With the daybed, by Argentine-Swiss designer Alfredo Häberli, the living room can be readily transformed into a second bedroom.

Classic Loggia

The classic double room appears part of something greater, due to the ingenious layout. This creates a visual interplay between the interior and exterior. It is redolent with 1970s charm.

Both the double bed and daybed, designed by Othmar Barth, are part of the original furnishings from the early 1970s. Everything has been lovingly restored, down to the finest detail; an example is the applique lamp from the 1970s, by the Italian lighting designer Goffredo Reggiani. This has been disassembled, polished and repainted. In combination with the American pine furniture and other timeless design pieces, the room is given an unmistakable retro charm.

Smart Loggia

Tall windows that open towards the lake and park landscape and a private loggia that provides a secluded outdoor retreat. The double room in the southern corner of the second floor offers a superb view of the constant changing waterscape.

Elements of the furnishings, such as the side unit in American pine with its round built-in mirror, were all designed by the architect Othmar Barth exclusively for the rooms in Seehotel Ambach. Some consciously placed timeless design pieces give the room an unmistakable retro charm. An example is the striking yellow Elmetto table lamp, by Italian lighting designer Elio Martinelli from 1976, or the bright red Vico Magistretti Selene chair from the same period.

Classic View

Having fallen in love in the original furniture and mood of this room, today's owners have sought to modernize modestly, with Italian design classics from yesterday and today.

Elements of the furnishings, such as the side unit in American pine with its round built-in mirror, the double bed or the comfortable daybed, were all designed by the architect Othmar Barth exclusively for the rooms in Seehotel Ambach.

Single

If nature be the stage, then a room at Seehotel Ambach is the auditorium. The natural spectacle unfolds not only from the loggia, but even from the bed.

Expectations determine the limits of possibility. With the greatest of care, the vintage American pine furniture and doors have been restored. The original doors have not only been extensively renovated, they have been soundproofed and equipped with key card locks. And if modernity has been drawn from, the spirit of the original conception remains.

Basic

Whoever adores functionality in a holiday, combined with a generous dose of the carefree, will find delight in these rooms.

The basic double rooms on the ground floor were only created 2016. They are furnished in the signature house style, with a plethora of reminiscences paying homage to the revolutionary designer Barth, architect of Seehotel Ambach. Large windows amply bathe the rooms in natural light and draw the vision toward the outer world with its the unspoilt park, ancient woodlands, and the mountains behind.
