The Alpine Squire

Belle-Epoque architecture plays host to the modern urbanite, a creative den that borrows British eccentricity hawking from the days past - a great base for those of you venturing up into the Alps or seeking a stylish bed on a foodie tour of Valais

Since first opening its doors in 1884, Hotel de Londres Brig has been the boutique base camp and home for explorers and travellers since the very first English gentlemen arrived into Valais/Wallis.

This small design hotel in the heart of Brig offers smart boutique accommodation for the modern nomads of today.

Built in the classical Belle-Époque style, this mini grand hotel is perfectly geared towards urban creatives seeking funky, contemporary design. Under the motto of Living Tradition, English eccentricity is woven with Swiss coolness and Walliser heritage in this boutique mountain hotel, which is what Brig is all about.

Hotel de Londres is where informality reigns with a mood combo of dapper English clubhouse meets urban contemporary, and where antiques subtly root the hotel with a sense of originality.

Playful, cool interiors illuminate the story of Brig's past with creative installations from House of Hackney and wallpaper gurus, Timorous Beasties from London.

The born-again Hotel de Londres has reworked tradition with creative ease and has been recreated as a must-stop-off hub - a chilled, modern base camp and home for the urban explorers on their way for a spot of mountain hopping, enroute to Saas-Fee and Zermatt, or hitting the vineyards of Valais.

We love the youthful room culture, nothing too cluttered, easy on the eye and brimming with creature comforts

A redefined designer take on the classic guesthouse hotel, breakfast at the Hotel de Londres is the main feature of its kitchen, with a snack menu available for the rest of the day. Otherwise guests are encouraged to either hit the town and its surrounding gourmet mountain chalets or simply chill over a hotel delivery from Brig's finest eateries.

Breakfast as the main affair is all about the bounties of the fertile Valais region. Farm fresh eggs, alpine cheeses and creamy yoghurts mingle with a nod to British heritage with a full English option.

Often over the weekends there is also a grill menu for guests and locals wishing to watch music concerts in the market square below the hotel. Within Brig and its surrounding vineyards and villages there are ample restaurants to choose from - each with regional specialities, including saffron-inspired dishes grown close by.

If you are seeking a private venue for that party, family gathering and or creative meeting, rent out Ottos Stuba for up to 30 guests, with easy access to mayor cities nearby like Zurich, just 2.5 H away by direct train.

Hotel de Londres is a family affair created by Brig locals, sister and brother duo, Lilian and Rolf, who both share a deep common passion for this little Alpine town in Valais. That’s why they created the hotel.

Rolf is a foodie – favourites include the local speciality of air-dried beef, loves a bubbling raclette and knows every wine produced in this part of Switzerland, perfect with a wedge of Valais cheese.

Working on the hotel project, Rolf was able to pull on his other passion and respect for craftsmanship.

During the renovation, the duo engaged many local craftspeople throughout the Hotel de Londres, which makes this place truly Valais at heart.

When not in the hotel, Rolf can be found outdoors, “I love the mountains in Valais – especially winter days on the Belalp. My three sons are mad about football and I enjoy supporting them. I never say ‘no’ to a wonderful meal with family and friends. Apart from my love for the region that is my home, Canada and Alaska are a source of particular fascination for me."

Lilian is originally from this charming little town and so when the old hotel came on the market, she couldn’t resist getting involved and set about instigating the restoration of it, she says, – “it was a chance of a lifetime.”

The Hotel de Londres sits proudly in the very centre of Brig occupying a presence in the baroque lined square of the town - scene of gatherings, concerts and general people-watching, also the perfect pit-stop enroute to the higher Alps.

The main train station is just a short walk away making it an ideal stop off enroute to the higher Alps and for a change of scene.
