Kerstens Architects – Refined craftmanship and balanced design

Simplicity and a lack of superfluous detail characterise the multifaceted work of Kerstens Architects design studio, based in Antwerp, headed up by Andy Kerstens – a man with clear vision of architecture, interior design and furniture design who trained at as a Master of Science in Interior Architecture (cum laude) at the University of Antwerp.

A thread of pared-back minimalism can be clearly seen, woven throughout Kerstens’ modern projects, which run the gauntlet of residential homes, offices, penthouses, showrooms and clinics. His honest use of materials, natural hues and tactile craftsmanship creates atmospheric spaces that are hugely liveable in and feel warm yet follow the clean, sober lines of modern design with an understated look.

Our own Aficionados hotel MUD Residences has had the Kerstens magic wand cast its refined charm over it. Throughout the property you’ll note a discreet lack of colour. Certainly, a signatory of Kerstens Architects, it also perfectly melds into the space, where nature is allowed to shine forth from the garden, light stream into the space though large windows and the absence of bold hues create a relaxed, serene space – perfectly in keeping for a guest house on the edge of the forest.

Andy Kerstens says that ‘designing the smallest details is crucial to achieving a total design, whereby the mutual relationship of all elements is enhanced by one idea, concept, and design’ and at MUD Residences we see how every little detail has been thought through in relation to one another. Rough, weathered natural materials contrast with smooth woods and natural limestone, softened by linen and jute. The refined and understated setting is enhanced by the details: vintage pieces, design collectibles and absorbing art curates the space as a whole to become an inspirational experience to enjoy.

Elsewhere in Kerstens Architects portfolio we see how his projects have allowed him to show his aptitude for design minimalism, like the contemporary pool house in Leest, Belgium created from weathered planks and elegant lines of concrete– open to the elements, creating a dialogue with the surrounding garden.

Kerstens's eye for understated form us echoed in an eye clinic in Haacht, Belgium which clearly demonstrates Kerstens's clean minimalist aesthetic with the subtle use of walnut, limestone and bronze accents to allow for a calm client experience and pleasant surrounds for doctors and patients alike.

We will be keeping our radar firmly tuned to Kerstens Architects for the next project on this minimalist design studio’s agenda.
