More relevant than ever, cult multi-faceted artist Yoko Ono has a new show, personally curated by the artist herself, showing in Kunsthaus Zürich, the first presentation of Ono’s work in a major Swiss museum. Featuring performances and exhibits, the show is titled This Room Moves At The Same Speed As The Clouds.

An artist of socio-political persuasion, Yoko Ono’s show will showcase the meeting point between poetry, conceptual art and performance in over 60 pieces through the medium of sculptures, works on paper, installations, performances, film and music.

Playing on the idiom of peace in the world, an issue that still sadly resonates today, Yoko Ono is also known for her work which portrays the notion of women’s rights. This Room Moves At The Same Speed As The Clouds is not a classic retrospective, rather it looks back on her work, particularly from her early years with a fresh perspective, including that of the visitor who is invited to interact and engage with pieces in their own way.

Of particular interest is the restaging of various performances by Yoko Ono, under her direction alongside her long-time curator Jon Hendricks and Kunsthaus curator Mirjam Varadinis. For example, a chamber orchestra will play, wrapped in gauze bandages in ‘Sky Piece to Jesus Christ (1965), and in ‘Voice Piece to Soprano’, visitors can activate the performance via a microphone. One of Yoko Ono’s most iconic performance art pieces is ‘Cut Piece’, which rails against female voyeurism and violence, at Kunsthaus Zurich it will be re-enacted by subversive artist Rong Xie.

Yoko Ono’s exhibition will be the first solo show in the Chipperfield Building – a new extension to Kunsthaus Zurich, which holds the largest art collections in Switzerland, with works from the 13th century to the present day. The Chipperfield Building was designed by London-based firm David Chipperfield Architects, providing a modern beacon in vertical limestone slats contrasting with the traditional Kunsthaus.
