Eye-catching, clean-lined and colourful, Fabricaal’s rugs and blankets are crafted from methods created as far back the 16th century, yet today they suit the modern home surprisingly well. Created using a traditional weaving process, the wool yarn is pushed through a loom, in an artisan practice upheld today to ensure the sustainability and continuation of the region’s finest craftsmanship.

Made in an array or colours and patterns, the rugs do not differ in their thickness – but some come with fringes. With a large suitability of uses, these rugs brighten up a dark corner, create a statement hallway, add style to a bijou bathroom, heighten the drama of a living room or create the finishing touches to a bedroom. Lain over wood floors, stone or carpet, these rugs are made to stand out. You can also accessorise with cushion covers, poufs and footrests – even handbags and MacBook laptop cases.

Story

Inherently a part of the fabric of Alentejo wool craft history, the region is said to have produced wool since the 16th century and onwards – the tightly woven and warm material made excellent cloaks for the shepherds who had to endure cold winters on the land while tending to the flocks of merino sheep.

Although the woollen mills have been owned over the last few decades by a range of artisans, today Portuguese trio António Carreteiro, Luís Peixe and Margarida Adónis are the new generation of fábrica alentejana de lanificios who continue to produce the blankets and rugs in a traditional method, consolidating this skilled craft, unique to the area. Transformation lies within the blankets whereby clients can personalise their own products, making it ideal for contemporary homes
