Athens

Athens. A city of such ancient historical weight, it’s no wonder the capital’s charms lay for centuries in the fascination of its antiquities: the ever-present Acropolis and Parthenon, its agoras and temples and the adjoining museums stuffed with the treasures of Ancient Greece.

But to visit Athens today is so much more than this. The buzz of the city, its energy and edgy architecture has risen up from a recession low-point and now in revival-mode, it’s a pleasure to see the city redefine itself. Athenians are resourceful, deep thinkers, creators and innovators, resulting in a wealth of culture, street art and foodie enterprises. Athens shines into the future with a creative energy building upon its heritage with striking new architecture, and those little corners of peace in the city, like its wonderful publishing and book district of Kolonaki.

Athens also rocks and we see the parity with Berlin and Mykonos with its burgeoning urban party scene in Keramikos, Metaxourgeio and Exarcheia, although the beachside nightlife of Glyfada draws easy comparisons with Ibiza.

If you can, make time for strolling without aim, soaking up the street art, stopping at bakeries for Athens’ take on sourdough, and exploring the Varvakeios Market with its adjoining hipster kebab joints and street food. Top up on 20th century culture at the Basil & Elise Goulandris Foundation where you can gaze at the wonder of artists such as Cézanne, Van Gogh, Monet, Degas, Picasso, Miró, Giacometti and Chagall to name just a few of the art kingdom’s mega stars. Finish your day at a restaurant newcomer and the taste culinary sensation that is Asian-Greek fusion.

Moving on from Athens as most eventually do, including the Athenians - the pull of Greece’s dazzling islands are mythically strong - might mean making your way to the Cyclades including vista-spectacular Santorini, her sleepy, soulful neighbour Tinos and off-radar Koufonisia.
