The Tanned Sentinel

Intro

Perched high in the almost middle point of Santorini and the caldera, sits the new design hotel Apikia Suites, a modern sentinel set against hilltop Pyrgos’ high medieval walls, offering a covetable vantage point over the whole of Santorini amid eco-conscious architecture and boho island living.

Luring romance-seekers and sun-worshippers for time immemorial, the charred, volcanic isle of Santorini in the Cyclades Islands has always dialled up the drama especially considering its history of explosive eruptions. Old Town Pyrgos in particular with its hilltop Kastelli saw its fair share of adventure from marauding pirates, crusading knights and defensive Venetians, hence those imposing fortress walls. Today, it’s the logic-defying views of the caldera and the Aegean Sea that brings the theatrics, and Apikia steals the show with its commanding panorama from Pyrgos – literally the highest point of the island.

Apikia is a new neighbourhood of Pyrgos and mirrors the traditional hallmarks of Cycladic design and follows the undulating landline; the cluster of mews houses cascade across the hillside with the terrain and radiate from the airy central courtyards, a typical feature in this part of the island. Architect Agni Kouvela of Greek practice Couvelas created Apikia as a series of abstracted eco-houses affording unobstructed island views. Seductive earthy tones cloak the houses, which melt this modern interpretation into the surrounding vineyards, crimson soils, and rocks. Apikia’s architecture reflects the solid, prepossessing vernacular of the surrounding ancestral buildings. Its construction shows a dense, chunky aesthetic familiar to Santorini, yet its fractal, protruded façade is sheer modernism.

Cut-out angeled windows architecturally frame the ever-changing views, and the inside lets Cycladic whites play host to a deliberately muted palette of seductive tones mirroring the landscape and gardens. Dramatic volcanic clad walls cast a moody air across the linen throws, designer seating, charcoal tables and hand-made pottery from the island. Aegean-blue plunge pools, loungers and hot tubs adorn the spacious private patios and sun terraces.

Apikia is a modern native, a cool Santorinian of luxury that is chilled and bohemian with Pyrgos and all of that lovely heritage just on your doorstep, including some of the island's best restaurants, and not forgetting those irresistible panoramic views which are inclusive of a stay here.

Apikia has the hallmarks of Cycladic design with cubic structures softened by curved terraces characteristic of Pyrgos’ old residences

Suites

Dens of extreme chill, your suites are the place to sleep, laze, dip in the pool and then gaze some more at the caldera views and the endless Aegean blues. Terraces are the spot for sunset, offering front row seats to the mesmerising panorama, accompanied by padded loungers and Cycladic gardens of herbs, eucalyptus and cacti.

It’s a tough choice to pick between the suites – do you want a hot tub or a plunge pool, a honeymoon haven or a two-bed villa set over four floors? What unifies them is a strong, sleek simplicity, dotted with meaningful local craft such as the sculptures based on the buried city of Akrotiri in Santorini.

Foodie

Greek Modern Food | Apikia Suites Pyrgos Santorini | Design Hotel Greece | The Aficionados

With suites this good, thankfully you won’t have to leave your cinematic caldera experience to eat breakfast. Your first meal is served by your private pool; all suites have an outdoor seating area so you can enjoy your repast alongside the caldera.

Depending on what you fancy there’s quite a range to enjoy, from freshly squeezed orange juice, Greek yoghurt and fresh fruit to more hearty options like pancakes drizzled with maple syrup, herby omelettes as well as the obligatory bread basket, pastries and muffins.

Wellness

As well as soul-soothing views, Apikia has built on the calming atmosphere at the hotel, providing a unique chance to take part in balancing therapies to complement your relaxing holiday in Santorini. In the privacy of your room or perhaps on a secluded terrace, enjoy a sound healing retreat through the vibrational waves of a singing bowl. Combined with breathing exercises, chanting and yoga, you’ll find a clarity of thought emerges, alongside a deep sense of emotional relaxation.

Treatments are also available, either using Ayuvedic, shiatsu or Thai therapies, or try something new – perhaps a hot gemstone and Ayurvedic oil massage – which promises to ease away stiffness and pain, enhancing your mood even further.

The Greek Island of Santorini views from Apikia Suites Pyrgos Santorini | Design Hotel Greece | The Aficionados

The hotel of Apikia is located in the old town of Pyrgos, in the very centre of Santorini, which is also the highest point on the island. The walled fortified village was once the fortress of the Venetians as they held back pirates, and the cobbled streets and winding alleys you see today were another method the Venetians used to confound their attackers. The heart is the Kasteli or castle, discovered through the Kaseloporta gates which reveals tiny chapels like the 10th century Theotokaki and Church of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary which crowns the top of the village. Elsewhere on Santorini, an island part of Greece’s Cyclades Islands, you’ll find beaches, villages, vineyards and a wealth of upmarket foodie options abound.

Owners

A native pair of original Santorinians, Iliana & Nikos, are the island couple and owners behind Apikia Suites. Be warned, they speak so passionately about the village of Pyrgos that you never want to leave. Walking through the narrow cobbled streets, everyone in the village knows them and trying to have a quiet chat over a coffee in the village square – well, almost impossible as locals share news and ask about the family.

The duo had a strong vision to add a new dimension to Sanotrini's hospitality scene by creating a hotel that resembles a traditional neighbourhood of the island. It was, after all, the grandmother's dream to create a place where families and friends will meet "a home that everyone will come together to enjoy beautiful moments". Watch the video, and you will start to understand why they built on this land and why it was a family destiny that is now completed. Iliana is the creative soul behind Apikia Suites. She describes her style as "Greek design that is soft on the eyes, modern, yet rooted to island traditions - I like to play with both the aspects of Santorini architecture. Cycladic interiors, and I think my grandmother would approve."
