A Modern Idyll

Lagació Hotel San Cassiano | Alta Badia, Italy | The Aficionados
Lagació succeeds in being both modern and pastoral in essence, flavoured by the past through personal touches

Intro

Ladin culture infuses the modernist Lagació and defined the design blueprints of this eco hotel and spa that sits in awe of the UNESCO Dolomites in the village of San Cassiano.

Owned and created by Pio and Margareth Canins, the passionate nature lovers and custodians of folk culture, a profound attachment to Ladin culture and a deep passion for the protection of the environment, ‘this is the way we live day by day, beautifully simple when you know how.’

With the Dolomite peaks as the template, the hotel’s architecture mimics the rocky formation of the mighty Lagazuoi Mountain in its structure of local timber. Likewise, the use of light is clever, flooding the interiors with daylight and framing the theatrics of nature – an infinity of outside space captured in the angular wraparound balconies.

Interiors hark from traditional materials of heritage: loden cloth, sawn timbers, linens and leathers. Wood leads the design dialogues and fills the rooms with a soft scent of the forests and gives that ‘chalet’ vibe to the modern, spacious rooms, suites and self-catering apartments. Frescoed painted furnishings, regional bric-a-brac and hand-stitched cloths capturing the Ladin culture.

Another core element of getting in touch with the mountains is found in the spa. Being so close to the Dolomites, you don't really want to spend time cooped away, and thankfully here considerate design has created an eco La Palsa Spa that has large floor-to-ceiling windows and lots of outdoor terraces and balconies to take in the good air and Alpine eye candy - also in itself truly holistic. Inside a natural wooden cocoon lends an air of being warmly hugged by calmness. La Palsa is from the local Ladin culture and appropriately and literarily means - relaxation.

Lagació is a place where the homemade jams complement the local cured meats, a place where the mountain-inspired spa balances the soul and blends seamlessly with nature pure.  Wrapped by the Dolomites, this modern eco-resort pairs mountain lifestyle with simple elegance and luxury wellness vibes. An authentic location accented with the local Ladin culture that feels at once both holistic and fun.

The family has triumphed in creating an idyllic modern mountain pad that still echoes traditional South Tyrolean style and homage to Ladin culture.

Suites

The easy breezy, wood-scented suites are the perfect place to live for your time in the Dolomites. Creating the sweet spot between style and function, the rooms have that chalet-chic ambience whilst simultaneously giving you everything you need. Light streams in through floor-to-ceiling windows, giving you a complete sense of place, as well as the gentle nods to Alpine traditions and stunning views of the Lagazuoi mountains.

The kitchenettes provide a streak of independence to root you in the Dolomites; even better use it as an excuse to order in local treats and delicious goodies to consume at breakfast and whenever you need a pick-me-up snack.

This area is known for the countless Michelin star restaurants - just venture out of your suite door for foodie heaven

Foodie

Lagació Hotel San Cassiano | Alta Badia, Italy | The Aficionados

Alta Badia is, of course, famous for its food, with several Michelin-starred restaurants right in the village of San Cassiano and a dozen just beyond - for this reason, Lagació opted to offer self-catering within its suites, and also went for a fabulous spa instead of a hotel restaurant serving dinner.

Instead, they serve the most delicious breakfast in the traditional, wood panelled stube, all bio and organic, teaming with homemade produce of South Tyrol. As most of the suites are geared for self-catering, they also have created a little online shop where you can order your very own bio-crates of deliciousness.

Our bet is that when you chat with the owners you will discover the gourmet trail in the countless chalets, cafés and restaurants - everything from farmhouse warmth to the Mediterranean delicacies of Alta Badia.

La Palsa is from the local Ladin culture and appropriately literarily means - relaxation. Further connectivity to South Tyrol is conveyed through genius TEAM Dr. Joseph - who craft products that harness ‘the power of nature in a jar’ with intelligent use of herbs and plants from the South Tyrol region, as well as their own herbery. There is a sauna, a Finnish sauna, a low-temperature bio sauna and an ice fountain for cooling.

Kids & Co.

A family friendly hotel full of 24+ family suites, Lagació is a place for rest and relaxation for all ages, including in its rooms small conveniences like a baby bottle warmer, baby monitor and cot for the younger guests. The Alta Badia valley is a playground in itself and offers lots of children’s parks as well as a museum, alongside excellent skiing for the whole family.

Location

Lagació sits surrounded by the mountains in the small town of San Cassiano, Alta Badia, in the South Tyrolean province of Bolzano (Bozen).  With the scenic backdrop of the Unesco Dolomite mountains, the hotel is 11km from Sass de Stria mountain and 12km from Falzarego Pass. The Piz Sorega gondola, 100 yards up the road from Lagació, links into the Dolomite ski circus, 1,200km (750 miles) of pistes and 450 lifts covered by the Superski pass, the most extensive in the world.

Owners

Margareth & Pio Canins - the owners of Lagació Hotel San Cassiano | Alta Badia, Italy | The Aficionados

A love of nature runs through Pio & Margareth Canins’ inspiration for their hotel as much as their profound attachment to Ladin culture and a deep passion for the protection of the environment, “this is the way we live day by day, beautifully simple when you know how”.

When creating this place, the couple poured their travel tales, own ethos and personal way of living into the concept – this is more than just a hotel – it is a way of life that feels more like the modern mountain home of good friends from the village of San Cassiano, called Pio & Margareth.
