Zermatt

Switzerland

Built at the base of the Matterhorn, a hypnotic 4,478m high geological wonder often nicknamed The Toblerone Mountain, Zermatt is a rustic Alpine village that’s been a prized destination on explorer’s maps since the 1470’s. Zermatt is quintessential provincial Swiss charm, with rows of chocolate box chalets, charming cobblestone lanes, and farmhouses and homes that marry grand Belle-Époque drama with earthy materials.

In summer, the wildflower-strewn valleys and mountains make the ideal backdrop for hiking, biking and climbing. You can even ski in summer on the Theodul Glacier or take the Glacier Express for a train ride with one awesome view at the top from 3883 feet above sea level. In winter, skiing is the name or the game with a huge ski area plus opportunities for free-riders. The Gornergrat Railway, the Matterhorn Museum and the Gorner Gorge are other places to pop in to and enjoy on your visit. Fly to Switzerland to Zurich or Geneva, then connect to Zermatt by train or bus. Don’t forget Zermatt is car-free and all vehicles must park 7kms from the centre. A hotspot for foodies, the village boasts some 30+ restaurants, 17 of which were reviewed in the 2020 edition of Gault Millau, several that are also Michelin-starred locations. There is also a thriving and varied Après ski scene with some 50 bars, including the famous Elsie's Bar - ideal for a glass of fizz before returning for a romantic stroll in the crisp air.
