Casa Fortunato Alcácer do Sal | Alentejo Portugal | The Aficionados
A beauteous retreat of apparent heritage paired with a playful, imaginative style narrative of considered design and heirloom nostalgia

Casa Fortunato in Alcácer do Sal is already part of the family and is beginning its new journey in becoming a stylish lair in the old town, just off the market square. Slow-Lane living in a typical Villa of town life best captures the design template of a Casa that is more than 100 years old. Located on the street named after the Royals, the house will have six suites only, a wonderfully shaded courtyard garden that cascades in tiers and a pool. Inside, the owners preserve and restore the old bones, including decorative frescos and the beautifully worn tiled floors. The town is typical of the Alentejo,  a place that still chimes to a slower pace of life, where embroidery is still done the way as for centuries, rush hour consist of older folk having a coffee, and traditional town-life continues under the ever-present church bells and the Sado River.

Following on from the successes of Casa Fortunato in Lisbon, the new project will continue the seductive fusion of small design hotel meets stylish townhouse. Created by the same creative duo, the new project will keep the style DNA of Casa Fortunato. Expect heirloom design fused with rural-side coastal living, chilled, casual and ever so stylish: like staying at a best friend's smart house.

Loved and created by the owner-architect duo, António Falcão Costa Lopes and his wife, Filipa Fortunato, the light-filled, intentionally eclectic interiors of Casa Fortunato are wonderfully familiar and irresistibly voyeuristic. Much of the original bare-bone remnants of the house were salvaged just enough to give provenance a historical hug – bygone romance in an empirical dusting of ornate architraves, wooden panelling, chiselled portals, marble flagstones and original sanded pinewood flooring. Costa Lopes and Fortunato have been collecting contemporary furniture, and lighting in particular, since they first met as architecture students in the ’90s. It is that, which gives Casa Fortunato its rather distinctive and personable design DNA – it feels coveted, treasured.

Crafted elements of nautical design slip into bed with urban cool.

António and Filipa are parents, they have successful careers and now they are hosts. They couldn’t be better suited to the part – as communicators and creators they are thrilled to be sharing their Casa, full of pinwheels, starbursts and simple authenticity with the exceptional people whose paths lead them here.

Located along an aged cobbled street steps from the main square, Casa Fortunato is located in Alcácer do Sal.

One of the oldest port cities in Portugal spanning almost 3000 years, the Phoenicians founded Alcácer do Sal more than a thousand years before Christ.  Located in the Alentejo region, Alcácer do Sal sits just a 30-minutes drive from coastal Comporta and 45 minutes away if the district capital of Setúbal. The city meanders along the left bank of the River Sado, just before it widens into an immense estuary and onto the flawless white beaches of the Tróia Peninsula.

António and Filipa’s souls were woven together when they met at university in Lisbon whilst studying architecture. Their varied lives have since taken them all over the world, but it is now that they have chosen to bring their shared, long-standing vision to life – welcoming guests over the threshold of their exceptional home and into the sanctuary that is Casa Fortunato. In 2017, Costa Lopes and his brother, Alexandre, decided to move the Lisbon office of their small Angola-based firm, Costalopes

António and Filipa have known and loved the concept of Casa Fortunato for countless moons, they had always whispered to each other about a fantasy they shared; to create memorable little hotel-guesthouses. It would be elegant and unique. It would be, not only their family home but home to visitors from all over the world. Together, they brought this dream to life. This legacy continues moving out of Lisbon to a new beachside venture opening this Summer 2021.
