Intro

An eco-friendly style refuge, The West Nest is a curated marriage of dramatic Scottish wilderness and contemporary rural living found on the rugged west coast of the Isle of Skye in Glendale, close to nature spot Neist Point famed for spotting whales, basking sharks, dolphins and majestic sea eagles. Built in the traditional low-slung architecture, the house evokes the form of the island’s crofter’s lodges. This modern re-work comes as a two-bedroom boutique hideaway that sits clasped into the greenery of the landscapes facing Little Minch, Loch Pooltiel and the distant island of North Uist.

Taking inspiration from the rustic crofter’s lodges that speckle the largest island of the Inner Hebrides archipelago, The West Nest nurtures the vernacular of tradition. Its cottage-white-painted exterior and slate-tiled roof bring to mind original Scottish farmhouses, built with simple, local materials to withstand the sometimes-harsh conditions and lying low and protected into the landscapes.

Inside, the reigning interior remit is cued from the island’s natural simplicity with borrowings from the Scandinavian design school of thought. Smooth oak woods sit softly against tufted wool rugs, an energy-efficient log burner cradles the lounge, the corner sofa is perfectly positioned to the view, and the drinks trolley is within reach. Pools of light come from Flowerpot lighting by Verner Panton and mid-century oiled oak Carl Hansen Wishbone Chairs circle the black steel statement dining room table. The two cosy-soft bedrooms benefit from throws loomed at Skye Weavers – likely from the sheep that wander past your window.

Practicalities like a salvaged wood boot room and well-equipped kitchen make staying here self-catering to be relaxed and easy. Outside, a timber decked terrace extends the living arrangements to al fresco. So stoke the fire pit, sink into a beanbag and nurse a wee dram from Talisker whisky or Misty Isle gin from the Isle of Skye Distillers while the landscapes wash over you. Sunsets, stars and the inky-black sea views characterise your stay.

Meeting the axis of style, comfort and Scandi minimalism, The West Nest is a holiday sanctuary from the elements whilst allowing access to its wilds: castles, lochs, beaches and dolphin spotting are all here. Nordic chic headlines at this Isle of Skye eco-conscious outpost of comfort and cool.

Rooms

Two bedrooms make The West Nest a cosy refuge for a couple or two. The master bedroom is a homage to the surrounding greens, making the brass lighting pop. The second bedroom has a more tonal palette. Taking inspiration from the gorse and heather that covers the hill behind the house, pops of yellow nod to the gorse flowers that flourish in spring.

Furnishings are pared-back, with a minimalist aesthetic, each room has a simple wooden bedside table and pendant lighting and wooden floors. The master bedroom comes with its own luxury ensuite swathed in marble with copper light fixings and an oval mirror.

The toiletries are supplied by Organic skincare producers, Ishga, who are based in Stornoway just across the water from the house, and the beds come with cotton percale bedding from the luxury-bedding guru, Richard Haworth.

Foodie

Alfresco Dining | The West Nest Isle of Skye | A design self catering holiday home in Scotland overlooking the coast in Glendale | The Aficionados

Foodie options are abound on the Isle of Syke – whether you want to cook at home with the abundance from the sea – mackerel, lobsters and mussels, or head out to a variety of restaurants from the famed Three Chimneys to cosy pubs to upscale dining and traditional tea rooms. We like small restaurant Eòlach, located in Glenelg Bay on the mainland, where the sweeping landscapes are a source of inspiration for their eight-course tasting menus made up of local ingredients, foraged food and wild coastal plants. Another favourite is Chidakasha, a vegetarian restaurant just across the glen. The owner tends to the vegetable and herb gardens throughout the day and then is cook/server in the evening. She has an immense passion for Tea and creates a stunning vegetarian tasting menu with tea pairing, less than a mile from the house.

If you want to take some of Isle of Skye back home with you, look out for smoked salmon, black pudding and of course, whisky, which you can procure on a tour of the nearby Talisker Distillery.

The Isle of Skye is the largest island of the Inner Hebrides archipelago and is actually attached to the Scottish mainland by bridge, which you can drive over. You may come from Glasgow Airport (216 miles) if you’re arriving internationally, or else domestic travel tends to come from Inverness (112 miles) either on the sleeper train from London or by plane.

Feathered in outline with narrow lochs and jutting peninsulas and surrounded by misty sea views, Skye is all about the great outdoors and it’s here you’ll see some of the dramatic landscapes Scotland is famed for. Like Dunvegan Castle, the ancestral seat of the Macleod clan for 700 years, which you can admire from its clifftop perch, swathed in 42,000 acres of rolling Scottish landscape. The crystal-clear waters of Fairy Pools are lovely to discover on a hike, with water fed from the Cuillin Mountains.

Owners

When a luxury hotelier and aeromechanical engineer in renewable energy fused ideas in creating their ‘perfect’ Scottish escape in the wilds of Syke, you can figure that you end up with a green-inspired stylish bolthole that comes with respect for its surrounding nature as well as all those lovely creature comforts. Gordon and Dean took what originally was a new build cottage into a crafted, contemporary holiday retreat. “We both have a love for nature, Scandi design and quality craftsmanship. In designing The West Nest, we wanted to create a sanctuary of relaxation that embodied our passions, while supporting local crafts.”
