A new-build of sensitive purity sits in a clearing surrounded by fir trees in Austria’s Bregenzerwald. The greatest homage to nostalgia, the house was built in memory of owner Edith’s grandparents Hannah and Alwin, here their farm once stood, creating pure childhood memories of mountains, meadows and freedom.

Today, Halwina Hideaway stands sentinel over the serrated peaks of the majestic panorama, a smooth, timbered beacon which merges reminiscences of the past with a sleek design edge mixed with modern craft. Reconfigured to have two spacious and luxe apartments inside, the hideaway is a window to a world of mountain eye candy, rethought for the idyll-seekers of the now.

Architect, builder extraordinaire and devotee of timber, Jürgen Haller was brought in to help fuse classic Bregenzerwald architecture with contemporary flair whilst still respecting the nostalgic alpine craftsmanship and natural vernacular. Timber, the long-time friend of Bregenzerwald architecture, clads the building, not only in a nod to its past but also to the future – locally sourced, sustainable natural spruce is in keeping with the eco principles of the house where a photovoltaic system creates heating and e-charging points are available for electric cars. Instead of the formulaic, shuttered heritage windows of old, Haller decided to design the windows asymmetrically, creating an interesting and dynamic look to the façade.

Inside, unoiled timber reigns supreme, wrapping floors and walls creating a tactile yet barefoot, purist cosiness, contrasting nicely with splashes of floral wallpaper, coffered ceilings and old-style tiled stoves. Picture windows let the panorama right into the rooms, with comfy seating and blankets ready to envelop you into the view. The blank canvas of panelled wood is the perfect backdrop to modern amenities – black kitchens, marble-topped islands, industrial light fittings and freestanding, oval bathtubs.

A house that stands as a monument to the past, embraces the future whilst tapping into our desire to connect meaningfully with our environment. Halwina Hideaway sits right in the midst of this.

Apartments

Within Halwina Hideaway are two apartments, each spacious, tranquil and with views that stretch to the distant peaks. Fragrant silver fir wraps each as the dominant interior design theme and layered onto this is a feeling of light that floods in from large windows and loggias which allow access to the freshest of air and panoramic views.

Apartment Hannah is the largest, set over three floors with three bedrooms; it also has the addition of a top floor barn complete with yoga deck and sauna plus plenty of window seat nooks for hiding away with just the view for company. The kitchen harks back to the cosiness of old with a traditional tiled stove, radiating warmth into the room. Slightly smaller, Apartment Alvin has two bedrooms, two bathrooms and a modern-style stove in the spacious kitchen creating a hub of comfort.

Foodie

Being apartments with modern-day appliances, you’ll have no trouble creating that perfect coffee, sharing platter or something more refined. If you like things with a little less effort required, you can call on the next-door baker Sabine for breakfast to your door with a spread to keep everyone happy. Sabine will even teach you how to bake her specialities in a baking course that will take place in your own kitchen

Elsewhere in the environ, there are many places to experience the region’s cuisine - ask owners Edith and Peter for their recommendations such as Gasthof Hirschen in Sibratsgfäll and Weiss, the restaurant of the innovative chef Milena Broger.

Location

The 22 villages of Bregenzerwald are located southeast of Lake Constance in Austria and Halwina Hideaway can be found outside the municipality of Sibratsgfäll in the Vorderen Bregenzerwald. The picturesque village, 1000m above sea level, is blessed with nature’s finest: mountains, meadows, valleys and streams.

Both winter and summer brings their charms to the Sibratsgfäll – bikers and hikers can ascend and descend mountain pathways and the turquoise Subersach river is perfect for a spot of wild swimming. Winter sees the Krähenberg ski lift open up to small but well-groomed slopes, and the Bregenzerwald ski area is accessible from here. Other cultural points of interest are the Women’s Museum in Hittisau and the Vorarlberg Museum.

Owners

Your hosts are Edith and Peter, owners of Halwina Hideaway and a forward-thinking duo who took a chance on a nostalgic feeling. With instinct a powerful tool, the couple have successfully brought about a new incarnation that still speaks to the past - the farm where Edith spent her childhood.

Today, they welcome guests, saying

“As the hosts of Halwina, we will show you a place that gives you strength and radiates calm, which we provided with high-quality materials and built with great attention to detail. Our house is the beautiful starting point for your vacation, just as you dream it. Bring time and you will forget the time.”

Because Edith knew how intoxicating time spent here was. She grew up in the Vorderen Bregenzerwald where visits to Grandma Hanna and Grandpa Alwin’s farm in Sibratsgfäll were accompanied by powerful emotions of freedom, innocence and natural beauty – something that harnessed today has the opportunity to take us away from our everyday lives.
