Muck’n’Muffins: a sisterly venture of handmade goods

Breac.House, the modern retreat in the seaside town of Dunfanaghy that is one of our Irish partners, is a clever blend of contemporary and rustic.

Quite literally located on the edge of Ireland, the coastal resort town is exposed to the elements: the mountains on one side, the ocean on the other. Inside, local craftsmen and women worked on creating the furniture and the finishings, from the fixtures in Fanad granite and Ardara Quartzite from a South Donegal quarry, to the clay pottery lovingly crafted by the Moore sisters of Muck ‘n’ Muffins, in which the Breac.House owners Cathrine and Niall serve breakfast.

The two sisters, Deborah and Emma Moore set up Muck’n’Muffins in 2000, in a three-storey building on the village square of Dunfanaghy in County Donegal, Ireland. They renovated the former grain store, built in the 1800’s, which has views on the square as well as the harbour, in the picturesque Sheep Haven Bay.

Here, they create hand-turned pottery in their ground floor workshop, where they use throwing, hand-building, bisque firing and ceramic glazing techniques. Each piece - of stoneware, tableware or sculptural objects - is individually crafted from Inishowen clay.

In their gift shop, the pottery is sold next to a wide range of Fair Trade gifts from all over the globe.

The handmade soaps, recycled clocks and classic toys that can be found here transfer the message clearly: Muck’n’Muffins is a spot where craft, quality and fairness come first.

The coffee shop upstairs offers hot drinks soups, toasties, wraps, sandwiches, quiches, fajitas and salads - wholesome foods for lunches or snacks, and of course, cakes and muffins to still the hunger for a delicious desserts. There are gluten-free options, too.

If you’ve loved having your breakfast at Breac.House out of custom made Muck’n’Muffins cups and bowls, take a bit of Donegal clay home with you: a visit to their gift shop is a must while strolling around in Dunfanaghy, and don’t hesitate to linger around for a house-made muffin…
