Eddie Doherty is one of Ireland’s last handloom weavers. At the age of 16, he learned to weave by hand, and he has been doing so ever since for 40 years – a one-man band in Ireland’s tweed industry.

Using 100% pure Donegal wool, Eddie hand weaves pure wool blankets and tweed, some with herringbone and others with more traditional check.

Story

Eddie Doherty first learn to weave at the age of 16. WIth two long stints at large Irish fabric companies in between and a chunk at playing pub landlord, Eddie came back to his craft. Based in the town of Ardara, the cradle of the tweed industry in Ireland, Doherty uses traditional methods to produce his pure wool blankets and tweed of a truly exquisite quality.

According to Doherty, his tweeds are softer and finer than the better-known Harris tweed of Scotland. He believes that he is the only person in Donegal still weaving on his own: “The others all have employees”, he says.
