Alchemists of Purity

Intro

A pioneering conversion of sweet minimalist charisma, Anders Mountain Suites in Bressanone (Brixen) South Tyrol has risen from the vestiges of a former hotel to create a concept-driven stay of design immersed in the mist-swirled mountain scenery of the Italian Dolomites.

From the original 50 rooms of the previous hotel to now just seven, owner Andreas Plattner alongside architect Martin Gruber has radically revolutionised the idea of the hotel – placing emphasis firmly on individual experience. Surrounded by the green spires of pine trees and the melodrama of movement over the jagged mountain panorama of the Plose massif, Anders Mountain Suites has a low-lying minimalist profile, smoothly sculptural: tree trunk meets chiselled construct. A mix of fluid spruce balanced by a sleek concrete lid, Anders Mountain Suites is striking in its originality.

The hotel’s interior reveals surprises too. Firstly, it feels wildly open and brave – panoramic windows allowing the ever-changing weather to sweep over the snow-dusted peaks, yet the use of smooth, brushed spruce wood and roaring fire cushions its inner space. And space you will have. With an absolute maximum of 14 guests here at any one time, these roomy interiors are here for you to own. The suites in particular, give you an inescapable intimacy with the mountain view. Set over two floors, your living room, bedroom and even sauna are tucked up against that vista and tinged with alpenglow; it’s sheer cinematic polish.

At 1850 metres, the hotel is lofty enough to be able to ski straight out of its door, as well as hiking in summer. Guests are invited to interact with this pristine mountain wilderness, yet its calling card really is its aesthetic concept. A design refuge for those that like their head in the clouds but feet firmly placed in architectural modernism, Anders Mountain Suites and its all-consuming views sets new standards in luxe alpine hospitality.

Suites

Having your own personal audience in front of the magnificent Dolomites feels very privileged here in the seven spacious suites. Allowing the ever-changing mountain vistas to sail past, the floor-to-ceiling windows mean the barriers between inside and out and are artfully stripped away. Interior furnishings are pared down too, in appreciation of the superior nature outdoors.

Set over two floors, each suite is designed with local spruce wood cocooning the walls and ceilings, stone-grey cement floor and super-luxe beds and soft seating perfectly lined up to watch the cinematic performance of mother nature. The addition of private saunas and gardens elevate the suites to a ultra-luxe level.

Owner Andreas Plattner, alongside creating inspiring hotels, is also a passionate chef. At Anders Mountain Suites he has curated a relaxed, informal dining scene, where guests are free to eat when and where they want – by the fire, in the restaurant, by the picture window or in your suite, where you can even create a meal for yourself with a specially prepared ‘cook box’.

Cuisine here is of a high-quality with an attention to detail that makes the flavours sing. Using a mix of South Tyrolean and Mediterranean influence, the menu features hand-picked herbs from the garden, organic produce from local suppliers and meat from nearby farms.  You might enjoy one of Andreas signature BBQ’s and another highlight is the honesty bar – filled with tempting treats, mix-yourself cocktails and regional delicacies. Wine-lovers will love the chance to chat wine with Andreas, and choose the right bottle for the right occasion.

Location

At an altitude of 1850, Anders Mountain Suites is located in the heart of the UNESCO protected World Heritage Site of the Dolomites, in the Italian Alps. The surrounding scenery of the Plose massif is dominated by jagged peaks and mist-swirled forests and inevitably is the scene of altitudinous pursuits – skiing, hiking, biking, eating in mountain huts, or simply enjoying the alpine scenery from dawn to sunset. The traditional northern Italian town of Brixen (Bressanone) is around 20 kilometres away, which glints romantically at Christmas with snow-dusted markets. Other sights include the 10th-century Cathedral of Brixen adorned with frescoes by Paul Troger and outside the city is Rodeneck Castle, Reifenstein Castle and Trostburg Castle.

Owners

With a strong connection to the mountainous terrain, it was here, up in the Plose massif that Andreas would play as a child, when his family owned the Hotel Aurora. Fast forward a few decades and he now owns a hotel that he designed himself, bringing the family business into the now – and the future.

It takes bravery to re-think the past for the future and Andreas broke the mould – the old Hotel Aurora, although full charm, needed revitalising and Andreas took a big step forward to make that change. Happily, the result is something rather special – a remarkable new livelihood for the family and a new lease of life for the hotel.
